Nothing is fun with a sore back

Filed under:

Back PainThis is getting silly. My back has been killing me for over a week now… and I still don’t know what I did to it. I think I probably pulled a muscle in it when I was at the gym… but I’m not 100% sure.

It’s not a pinched nerve or anything. It’s definetly a muscle thing. Going to stand, and going to sit hurt. I can even feel it when I walk. The good news is that over the last 3 days it’s been getting progressivly better. Very little by very little… but today is a lot better than 3 days ago for sure.

What really sucks about it is how I’ve had to limit my activities. I have gotten into the habbit of taking my iPod and going for a 30 minute walk around downtown every night… not latley. I usually try to get to the gym 5-6 times a week… not at all this week. It’s frustrating.

Today I felt good enough that I thought I’d give the gym a shot. So off I went… and the very first set of lat pull downs KILLED. So I thought “screw it… I’ll just hit the eliptical machine”. Yeah, forget that too… my back was killing me because of the pull downs. So I just left. I was in the gym for a total of 5 minutes… and now my back feels as bad as it did yesterday (not a total relapse…but still a step backwards.

So I guess the lesson here is “DON’T DO ANYTHING UNTIL THE BACK IS 100% BETTER”. I’ve learned my lesson. But this still sucks.

Why I Like The NHL Shootout

Filed under:

ShootoutOh yes my friends, Hockey is BACK!!! My life is complete again! Now, many changes have been made to the game. Not only the glorious salary cap (The NHLPA should have NEVER opposed it in the first place) but also some new rules (like no centre line), that says if regulation time ends and the game is tied, you play a 5 minute sudden death overtime… and if it’s STILL tied you go to a shootout.

Lots of people have been complaining about the shootout… and to be honest I’m not really sure why. Yes it’s a break with tradition a little bit… but so was a 5 minute overtime… and we all seem to think that’s a good idea now.

The most important thing about the shootout is that IT ELIMINATES TIES! That’s why they have the shootout… to get rid of ties. Ties are stupid. Really stupid. Basketball knows they’re stupid, Baseball knows they’re stupid, Football only has about 1 per year… so why should Hockey have them?

Think about it. 1 team travels 1000 kilometers to the host city. Almost 100 members of the media gather. Television and radio crews arrive with equipment and satellites ready to broadcast the game. 15,000+ people set aside their evenings to buy $70 tickets to come to the arena to watch the game. The two teams battle for 60 minutes risking injury and leaving their hearts on the ice. AND THEN IT ENDS IN A TIE?!?!?! That’s stupid. That’s beyond stupid. Eliminating the tie is one of the best changes that was made to the game in the off season.

Now, an argument could be made (and has been made) that perhaps there would be BETTER ways to eliminate ties instead of the shootout. That’s fair enough and perhaps should be looked at in the future. For now, ANYTHING that eliminates ties is a good thing. Yes… even shootouts… which the fans seem to love… including me.

They Broke Into My Car

Filed under:

CarWhy? Why would they do that? I went out to my car this evening to run some errands (including buying a new printer because my old one died about 2 months ago and I need to print stuff). So I go out to my car…

You have to understand that my appratment has outdoor parking only… so anyone can walk up to it if they want. No big deal because that’s no different than anyone who owns a house and parks in their driveway.

So I go out to my car and I notice the door is ajar. I didn’t really think anything of it… until I got closer… and I noticed that my glove box was open because the light was on. That’s when it dawned on me that my car had been broken into.

Now, perhaps the term “broken” into doesn’t really apply since I don’t lock the doors on my car. You see… when I lived in Saskatoon I always kept my doors locked… and that’s where I learned that if someone wants to get into my car then locked doors aren’t going to stop them. So not only did I loose the VCR I had in the backseat… but I also had a $200 broken window that I had to get fixed.

That experience taught me to NOT lock my doors… but rather keep them unlocked, and not keep anything of value in my car. Why lock my doors to protect a $100 car stereo, when they’ll just break a $200 window to get at it?

Anyway, this time nothing was taken out of my car… because I don’t keep anything in it. But it still confuses me. My car looks like junk… why would they even think that something of value be in there? Why risk being seen breaking into a car that obviously doesn’t have anything worth taking in it?

Oh well… just another mystery of the universe I guess.

Damn! Another Audio Edition Gone

Filed under:

Audio EditionI HATE HATE HATE technical problems. They leave me feeling so powerless and stupid. Yesterday Doug and I recorded our daily Audio Edition show for The Movie Blog. I’ve been doing this new thing where I introduce the show and the date first… and THEN then intro music hits.

The problem is… that I usually just do the intro and give the date… then PAUSE the recording… and then unpause it and continue recording the show (I edit the intro music in later). So yesterday I did the same thing… BUT…

When I later went to render out the final MP3 file for the show… only the INTRO came out… the rest of the show just DISAPPEARED! It vanished. Gone. No where to be found. I spent an hour looking around for it… but to no avail.

This is the 4th show I’ve lost in the last 6 months due to some technical problem or internet outage or some stupid thing. It’s really frustrating.

Well… needless to say we’ll be doing the show all in 1 take now… which is probably what we should have been doing in the first place anyway. Grrrrrrrr.

Starbucks And Bell Canada are EVIL

Filed under:

StarbucksEver since moving back to Hamilton I’ve been disheartened by that almost total lack of Wi-Fi (wireless internet) hotspots in town. Heck, even in Saskatoon there were a bunch of them. Places I could go hang out with my laptop and be able to access the web wirelessly.

I’ve always wished that coffee shops here would have it. Especially Chapters (all chapters book stores have Starbucks in them). I’ve always wanted to just go spend an afternoon there with my laptop and write for The Movie Blog or work on my book. Seems like a great place to do it.

So imagine my excitment yesterday when I read a news release saying that all Starbucks in Ontario are now Wi-Fi enabled through an agreement with Bell Canada. I immediatly called my local Chapters book store to ask if this was true. “Yes, we now have wireless internet” they told me with much pride. I was very happy.

So I packed up my laptop and drove out to Chapters planning on spending the afternoon there sipping on milk while eating chocolate chip cookies and working on my book. Yes… this would be a great day… UNTIL…

I got there, bought my cookie and glass of milk. Sat down and fired up my laptop… but when I opened up my web browser it immediatly went to a Bell webpage instead of my regular homepage. This Bell page told me that to access the wireless internet I had to PAY $7.50 FOR 60 MINUTES OF USAGE… OR $13.00 FOR THE DAY… OR $35.00 FOR THE MONTH!

I’m sorry… would you like me to lub up my ass before or after you rape me?!?!?! Are they insane!?!? I pay that much for high speed internet at HOME! Big mistake on their part. I would have easily spent 7-10 afternoons a month in Starbucks spending at least $5-7 each day I was there on their cookies and drinks. But now they’ll get nothing from me because once again… I have no reason to go and hang out there.

Ok, I can MAYBE understand them wanted to charge SOMETHING for the internet usage… but it should have been like $3/day or $10/month at MOST. Corporate greed. Grrr… I’m so mad.

Darren Conley on the Audio Edition

Filed under:

Darren ConleyThe good Mr. Darren Conley joined Doug and I on The Audio Edition tonight. It was actually really fun and we did a longer show than normal. We usually do a 20-25 minute show, but ended up going about a half hour.

After we did the show the three of us went out to grab a bite and take in some of the Leafs game (who as I type this are tied with Ottawa 5-5 with about 1 minute left in the game). However, I ate WAY too much and now feel sick.

Speaking of Darren, his new blog is now up and running. I personally look forward to tales of adventure from The Hammer
